A paternity case involves two parts.  First, if paternity is at issue, DNA test needs to be conducted to determine who the father of the child is.  The second part of the case involves child custody, parenting time, and support similar to a divorce.  In fact the same custody statute is applied to divorce and paternity.

A paternity case starts with the filing of a paternity case with court.  The paternity complaint alleges that one party is the mother and one party is the father of a child and the child was born out of wedlock.  Af the complaint is filed, the defendant (mom or dad) is served with the complaint.  If they agree that they are the mother or father, there is no need for DNA testing.  If the mother or father is disputing the parentage, then the court will order DNA tests to determine conclusively who is the father and mother of the child.

Once parentage is determined, the court needs to mark decision about child custody, parenting time, child support, tax deductions and other issues involving the minor child.  The court maintains jurisdiction to modify the order until the child is 18 or graduates from high school.
