Child Support in Michigan is based on the child support formula.  This has been reduced to a computer program that takes all the information and produces a child support amount.  The primary factors included in the child support formula are the number of overnights with the child and the income of the parties.  For example, if there is equal time and equal income, then the result should be zero child support paid by either party.  If you change the overnights with the child or the income of the parties, then one person would pay the other support for the benefit of the child.  The formula also takes into consideration health insurance costs, other support orders, other families, and the sources of income.  The formula can get complex.  The program and manual are free at the below links.
