The cost for a divorce attorney is one of the biggest concerns someone has when facing a divorce or separation.  There are stories of outrageous attorney fees for a divorce.  There a rumors that it cost tens of thousands of dollars for a basic divorce. Divorce Attorney fees can be intimidating. At Krupp law Offices we will fully explain fees and costs involved in your case. There are a number of ways to determine attorney fees.

Typically, a basic divorce with a competent attorney will be 1500.00 to 2500.00 dollars with filing fees and other costs.  Less than 5 percent of divorce cases end with a trail.  Most cases are settled.  You control the level and extent of litigation.  At Krupp law Offices we are always providing a cost benefit analysis to try and ensure you are not spending to much on your case.

There are different ways fees are charged.  They are as follows:

DIVORCE ATTORNEY FEES – HOURLY RATE

The first and most common is the hourly rate (i.e. 300.00 per hour). As the attorney works, he tracks his time and sends you a bill for the time spent on the case. Usually, “a retainer” or an advance on the fees is paid. For example, you paid 1,200 dollar retainer for 4 hours of anticipated work (at 300.00 per hour). Expenses incurred during your case are also added to your bill such as filing fees and witness fees.

DIVORCE ATTORNEY FEES – FLAT RATE

The second way to hire an attorney is a flat rate. One fee covers all aspects or a specific service. For example, 1,500.00 is the retainer for a matter on a flat rate. If the attorney spends 10 hours or 15 hours on the case, you have paid the fee in full. This is common for matters that exact amounts of time can be determined.

DIVORCE ATTORNEY FEES – BLENDED RATE

The third way to hire an attorney is a blended fee. For example, some aspects of the case are a flat rate and extra billing will be charged if additional work beyond what is described is done.
